Double on Quail

I'm down in Moultrie, GA this week hunting Quail at Morrison Pines. Last Covey of the day, I finally got my Double. Shot lights out with my Sterlingworth 20ga all day. Rich Anderson is hunting with me and he shot a double on the very first covey rise of the trip, so I had to strike back quickly or deal with the constant reminder (from Rich) that I had yet to shoot one.

I can't say too much, Rich was kind enough to let me shoot a few with his CSMC FE Grade Fox .410. What a gun that is.

Looks like we'll see "film at 11"!! Well struck Mikey! I understand the pressure you were feeling, especially since we all know just how sweet, warm and fuzzy Rich is. You wouldn't hear the end of it!!

It was a great time that's for sure, lots of birds, great dogs, guides and accommodations. It's worth the trip just to leave Michigan in January I didn't score a double with either Fox the 410 or the upgraded XE 16 so I guess a Fox doesn't get the game Scored doubles with the Parkers in 28 and 20 ga in fact two each! It does give me a warm fuzzy feeling all over when that happens

My Grandad wore out a double, of some make (he never said), then went to a 1897 Winchester. Many years after he passed an old quail hunting buddy of his asked me if Mr. Minis (Grandaddy) ever told me about the time he killed 13 birds out of a covey, at one time. I replied that I didn't remember him ever doing so. He replied "One day me and Mr. Minis were hunting birds and the dog pointed. I went around to the left, and he went to the right side, of an old house spot, kinda growed up. Your Grandaddy saw them huddled in a bunch on the ground and shot into them. He killed seven with the first shot, on the ground, then as they got up he killed six on the rise".

Those were the days of almost unlimited birds, when they would kill 50 birds or more each, a day. Birds were valuable meat on a farmers' table, and a ground swatting shot was not passed up. But, the six on the rise was pretty sporty shooting, I'd say.

I find this interesting. We were in Texas (Corpus Christi) in the mid 1960's. We had wild quail all the time. They were trapped and then killed and cleaned. There were quail absolutely everywhere. Them were the days.

Julia and I just got back from Morrison Pines today. We had a great time as well although I did not get to shoot a Fox. I did get a double with my Parker

Mills, on your quail double, is it because you do not have a Fox quail gun, only a Parker suitable for Bobwhites? Jim

Mike, we hunted with Fig.

Jim, I have a sterlingworth 16 gauge suitable for quail and a 20 gauge sterlingworth that works for quail. I rotate around on my guns to give each their turn
