Broken Forearm Latch

Post by Wallaceone »

I have an AE manufactured in 1924 whose forearm latch has broken. The break is across the moveable portion of the latch at the hinge pin, and appears to be an old crack that finally gave way. Can anyone tell me if the latch is plain carbon steel or an alloy? Thanks for any help you can send my way!

The latch is most often case colored when new, so it probably isn't alloy.
Recoil is most noticed when I miss

All latches I've worked on are made of mild steel that welds and machines quite easily. If you are refering to thru-hardened alloy steel as with high % alloying elements, it is not. If you do try to repair yours be sure its new pivot hole is located properly for a good draw and full engagement when the forend is latched in place. Silvers

Thank you for the information! My primary concern was related to the possibility that the latch might have a high percentage of alloying elements, and would provide some surprises during welding. I also appreciate the tip about location of the pivot hole. Thanks again!
