I just picked up a Skeet and Upland 16ga. The serial number has in manufactured in 1934.

Just curious does anyone know roughly how many of these were made?

Was that the one at Jaquas? Man ,it was a beauty!

From over thirty years of recording observed Sterlingworths it appears Savage made their Fox-Sterlingworths in blocks and a letter is really the only way to tell when made. Looking at the blocks that seem to appear in my observations I'd say there could be as many as 400 16-gauge S&UGGs. I have no way of knowing if all the guns in those serial number blocks were made. I have recorded thirteen 16-gauge S&UGGs.

The Fox-Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game Gun was introduced in Savage's 1935 A.H. Fox catalog. The 1935 & 36 catalogs only list 26-inch barrels for the Fox-Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game Gun.
By the 1937 catalog they list 28-inch barrels as well.
My 16-gauge, 26-inch, S&UGG, 374152, shipped in May 1938 --
A 28-inch 16-gauge S&UGG I know of in the 372xxx range shipped June 1936.

There is a seller on GI that has a handful of these guns for sale. One in every gauge and a couple of SPEs as well. They look nice. I have no connection with these guns nor do I know the seller.

I did not realize that the gun was produced with 28" barrels.

I haven't seen many, so when this one came available I jumped on it.

Should make a good little grouse gun.

Were all the Skeet and Upland guns marked on the barrel flats as such?

Just like Savage's Fox-Sterlingworth Deluxe there is no marking on the Fox-Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game Guns to identify them as such. At least I've never seen a marking.

Hopefully you didn't buy 364599.

The Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland guns weren’t marked as such. They were marked as all other Savage Sterlingworths. If the Jaquas gun was original and in high condition that would have been a good price.

Brett, thanks for posting those pictures and clarifying the absence of an identifying “stamp”. Back in 2017 Researcher posted a picture of 364599, and that gun was stamped “Upland Skeet”. Since 364599 was made in Philadelphia, the conclusion was that it was not legitimate.

Keep in mind that Fox (Philly and Utica) would make any length of barrels upon request from potential buyers.

Here is a 16ga SW S&U with a matched set of 28" and 32" barrels and forearms.

The gun shipped with the 28" barrels and went back to Savage later for the 32" barrels.

It's a nice combo for upland birds (grouse, quail, pheasants) and migratory birds (dove, ducks).

Foxnut, the 16-gauge Fox-Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game Gun you pictured is the mate to mine 374152 --

FWIW, I think the SKUGG in 16 ga. 26" version is the finest grouse gun ever designed and built. Light, fast handling, most are bored wide open (.004-6" RB, .010-12" LB), they are ideal for the dense coverts grouse and woodcock prefer. Kevin
