Fox Collectors

Had a chance to get out today and shoot a round of sporting clays with fellow Fox fan Jeff Stegmeier. We were both shooting Fox XE 12 gauges. Jeff’s is a SN 22XXX 30” straight stocked gun and mine is a SN 25XXX 32” SRPG gun.
Interesting to note that Jeff’s gun is an earlier deeply engraved gun with the head down fox on the floor plate and mine is a later lighter engraved engraved heads up fox gun with frame rebates on top and bottom. Fun to compare guns over periods of time as the engraving and features changed.
If I remember correctly Jeff said the card specified that checkering pattern. I’m sure he’ll chime in.
I should also mention that my gun was originally ordered with 32” F/F barrels. It still has 32” barrels but they are Chicopee Falls era #3 weight barrels. They are void of the breech end X engraved wedges. The rib extension is engraved with the Oak Leaf motif to align with the frame. Would love to know how/what happened to original barrels and when it made its way back to Savage for the new barrels. One can only imagine!!

Nice post Brett. I purchased that XE from Craig and it seems to me the original owner specified that particular checkering pattern. I’m away from my files right now, but I think he requested “no bands” in the checkering. Craig, do you recall the details?
Looks like a fun time! That’s twice that I have lingered on guns due to circumstances that I have later found that they have ended up in your care, Brett. Glad both have found a good caretaker at least! Sure would make a nice duck gun!
