Re: Need help on id
That is a Fox Model B of post WW-II era.
Savage Arms Corp. acquired the A.H. Fox Gun Co. in the fall of 1929, and moved production to the Savage factory in Utica, NY. By the late 1930s they were looking for a lower priced double to market playing on the Fox name. Savage Arms Corp. also wholly owned the J. Stevens Arms Co. of Chicopee Falls, Mass. They took the internal parts of the J. Stevens No. 530 double and put them in a somewhat nicer profiled frame with a bit nicer wood and introduced the Fox Model B with an insert in some of their 1939 A.H. Fox catalogs.
After WW-II, Savage consolidated their arms making operations at their J. Stevens factories at Chicopee Falls while the factory at Utica went to making products for the post-war housing boom. Production of the real A.H. Fox guns didn't make the move, but the Model B continued. Savage dropped the use of serial numbers but began using a date code starting with A = 1949 in a small oval on the bottom of the frame.
I can't quite make out the letter in your picture. We have no firm info on what the number in the oval means, but in that I've not seen a number higher than 26, my guess is it is the two-week pay period of the year in which the gun was made. Here are the Savage date codes --
Savage Date Codes
A 1949 B 1950 C 1951
D 1952 E 1953 F 1954
G 1955 H 1956 I 1957
J 1958 K 1959 L 1960
M 1961 N 1962 P 1963
R 1964 S 1965 T 1966
U 1967 V 1968 W 1969
X1970
The Gun Control Act of 1968, required serial numbers so a later Model B would have a serial number.
What is the company address on the barrels of your gun? Savage Arms Corp. moved to a new factory in Westfield, Mass. circa 1960-61.
