Mid year 2025 Fox shooting and collecting review

Post by fox-admin »

I can't believe 2025 is half over. It's been an uneventful year so far for me in the Fox realm. No sales, no buys, no bids. I'm fortunate and have most bases covered, some bases twice or three times LOL. I have shot all my Fox, Parker, LC Smith and Lefever guns this year at Sporting Clays, I normally shoot a different gun each outing. I try to shoot three days a week in our abbreviated Summers here in western NY. Attended both the Southern and Hausmann's. Planning on RM next month.
Nothing in the "got to have one" category. However, I wouldn't pass on a very good original condition Fox graded 20ga or Sterly 20ga with 28" barrels or 30" barrels. I don't own a 20ga Fox anymore. I never was much of a small bore guy for clays but have enjoyed the challenge recently.
How about you. Let's hear about your mid year 2025 buys, sells, wish list and shooting activities.

Added 2 so far and sold 3 and have a couple more in Josh Lowensteins upcoming auction in Sept. The two I added are a late Savage made A Grade 16 gauge Fox with 30 inch barrels and a super late Savage made Flat Side Sterlingworth Deluxe in 12 gauge with 28 inch barrels.

PS. RST is loading some 9 shot 2.5 inch 16 gauge shells soon and I have a flat headed my way. Sadly my local Isac Walton only allows size 9s for clay shooting and no one in the USA sells 16 gauge loaded with size 9s.

I traveled to Hausmann’s with the firm conviction that I would only purchase a small bore. Well….. it appears that I’m a weak man. I’ve never owned a Gough era grade B and there was a pretty nice one sitting on a table. After 3 days I finally caved in and bought it. 1917, 12 ga. with 30” barrels choked .030”/.030”. I’ll make a point to shoot a few ducks with it next Fall.

You did well on that B grade Jeff. I have been watching that one for a while and could never get myself to pull the trigger on it. Been trying to save up for an XE and didn't want to deplete the funds. That is a very nice gun.

Nothing new for me yet. Saving my scheckles for an XE20 a friend has which he is "considering" selling.

BTW Tom, could someone explain the reasoning behind that #9's for clay shooting rule?

I’ve added two guns to my collection this year. A nicely configured BE 12 gauge that is a bit of an oddity. Letters as a BE but has hybrid B and X engraving and D style checkering. The second gun was a very high condition 16 gauge Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland. Bought that gun from a fellow member. Pleased as punch to have been able to get both of them. I believe my wallet is empty for now!!

The 5 stand range has serious encroachment issues from multi-million dollar homes a short distance away. Reason I shoot there is number one its free and number two is its 5 miles from the house. Its a super nice 5 stand with 11 traps and is very well maintained. PS. We have Bull Run in Fairfax County, but its well over an hour for me to get there from my house.

No additions for me but I have sold 17 guns this year, (no Foxes) and funny thing is that I really don't miss any of them. (Well maybe the 45-70 SXS, but I digress) A mixed bag of Shotguns, Rifles and Pistols, old and new(ish).

I'm trying to boil things down to fewer nice ones.

Not a Fox, but my first 10g that I bought at the Southern. Which, in turn, forced me into the world of reloading. Here is my Ithaca Super 10 and my very first reloads that I tested today. I’ll keep working to improve the crimps.

Since January I finished my final purge of little/not used guns with 13 going to concurrent auctions and 4 others sold outright. In net the auction returns were a little better than I expected - some guns lower, others higher. In turn I bought 4 random guns, not Foxes. Same as others have written I'm down to those I'll regularly shoot or hunt with; some of them newer buys and others with memories over the years. Essentially I've shaken off the accumulator bug and am not trying to maintain a collection. frank

I did add a twenty eight inch twenty gauge. The gun is an early Utica gun made with Philadelphia parts. Trying not to buy any more guns but just couldn’t resist.

No need to apologize, that would be a tough gun to resist. Enjoy.

No selling so far this year. I have unsuccessfully bid on a few internet guns. It's amazing how much competition there is on internet auctions. I am pretty satisfied with the XE I bought on the net last year. By the way, when does Josh stop taking consignments for the September auction?
