Small size Silvers pad - pics

[Silvers]

Maybe ya'll have seen one of these before but I haven't. Came across a 20 bore Sterlingworth with what appears to be a small size Silvers pad. Hole spacing is the same as the regular S. W. Silvers that's still available, but thickness is only about .700", and the hole plugs are relatively small at 1/2" diameter vs. 11/16" diameter on the regular size Silvers.

This smaller pad is lovely IMO and it suits a smallbore Fox just fine. I haven't seen these available currently from SWS. If anyone has pull with Galazan maybe they can put in a plug for a repro..... Silvers

It looks nice on that gun but the hole spacing is still too much. I would rather use a No Shoc or Winchester 1922 pad with the logo ground off when padding a small gun. The smaller plugs on the No Shok and Winchester pad looks much better on a little gun.

Bobbie, a rear coincidence. I never saw one of these small Silvers pads before yesterday, and today was visiting with a friend who hauled out a small gauge Parker with the exact same pad - same thickness of rubber and black base, same 1/2" diameter plugs. Yep, why don't you go ahead with Tony's hot line. Frank

I to like that thinner Silvers Pad but like eightbore I also think the 3 1/4" spacing on the holes is too great for a small bore. You are getting very close to the toe of the stock when drilling for these and if the hole is not drilled properly you risk splitting the stock at the heel and at the very least it causes the heel to be a weak point. Paul I agree with Bill and you 100% on the hole spacing, also that there are better alternates. However this is the thinnest honest period pad I've seen. Pad was already on the gun when I got it. Same with the one on the Parker I saw today. Neither one was split in the toe area; I'm sure the craftsmen were careful when installing them. Frank

Frank, from the pictures it appears that the edges have been rounded/beveled? Gives a good look to the pad and I've seen pics of others that have this look. I have always left mine with a sharper edge. Any pluses or minuses to either one?

Mike, this gun comes up really nicely and I like that deep beveled look. The other one I saw today was also beveled similarly. Usually I'll "break the edge" on recoil pads but after seeing these two maybe I'll bevel them a bit more than in the past. P.S. beveled edges make the screw hole plugs look closer to the edge than they are. Frank

Riffle's Model 12 book (page 16) has a picture of a similar thin Silvers pad on a Model 1912. I have not seen this pad for sale anywhere, but Lou Rotelli on the Parker site supposedly installed such a pad for a PGCA member, so may have a source for them.

I don't have a genuine Silvers to inspect, but my 1" Silvers repros from Galazan and Jeff's have a large hollow section in the center that would seem to preclude grinding one of them down to .700" overall thickness.

I also just looked at a repro Winchester 1922 Patent Date Pad, and the screw spacing is only about 1/8" closer together than the Silvers repro spacing, but the plugs are much smaller, as Murphy pointed out. The Win pad screw holes are a little farther down from the top of the pad (i.e., the top hole is farther from the stock heel).

You might be able to size the plugs as you like, although the base holes appear to be drilled.

Theres seems to be some difference in various pads as I have 2 (20 ga.) with thin pads and on one the edge of the top hole is 5/16" from edge and the other is 9/16" which looks much better. These both appear to be orig. Silvers pads.
