South Dakota in December

Hello all and Happy New Year,

Brought the 16ga Sterlingworth back to SD for a second time this year. Lots of birds, lots of snow and cold. A good time was had by all!!

Quite the mix of dog's you have there. Is the red one a Vizsla or Lab? I have a fox red lab that could be that ones twin.

It looks like a good time.

I'm guessing 20 mph winds and circa 20 degree's when those photo's were taken. I drove from Va to MT and ND with my two hunting buddies twice with my golden and their Springers. We had a great time. As I recall one day was 65 and sunny and the next day was 28 degree's with 25 MPH winds out of the north. Great time indeed. Make's you appreciate good dogs, good friends and the really nice folks who make up those local communties out west.

FRBRIT,

Yes, he is Fox Red Lab about 4 years old. The other one is an 8 year old Wirehair female, both my brothers dogs. Mine is an American Water Spaniel, she will be 3 this April. The dogs had some serious bird overload with the large amount of birds and scent. They were birdy from the time we left the truck 'till the time we put them back in the truck.

You are right on!! Are you a weatherman?? The temps ranged from 5 to 25 depending on the time of day and the winds were rarely under 15-20 with a couple of 25+mph days.

A big part of our trips out west revolves around the fine people we meet. One morning at a resturant for brecky, I went up to a table of women having coffee. I introduced myself and asked if any of them could be of help finding some private ground to hunt. a couple of them said "sure, just stop out at our place, we have lots of birds" We tried to pick up the tab for their table and ended up with several good places to hunt then and for next year.

We have found that going out later in the season increases the chances of finding a place to hunt, although, we actually did just as good on public "walk-in" land.

I thought I recognized the red lab but I had to ask. Here's my pup that I said could be his twin. He is nine months old in this picture. This was the first week of December '08 in Arizona.

I'll ask my brother for the name of the kennel. I know it was in SE Wisconsin, maybe around Waukesha.

Yes sir, it is the same gun. The Briley chokes were very useful out in South Dakota, had the improved modified in the left barrel for the whole trip.

Been giving some thought to putting on a new stock and making her look real pretty. As it is now, there is a bit too much drop in the stock.

Rudyc, Thanks for the link. I looked things over and don't see any relationship to my pup. His grandparents came out of England.
