Hi Folks,
I just read through the thread on Bo Whoop below and couldn't help but wonder. This is a legal thought for us to ponder. The gun belonged to Nash Buckingham. He lost it and clearly wanted it back since he took out advertisements in several papers of the time offering a reward for it's return. Fast forward 58 years and someone walks it into a gunshop for stock work and the whirlwind begins ending at the Julia's sale with a hammer price of $175,000. The question to ponder is who is the rightful owner of the gun and who had the right to sell it? Were the rightful owners of the gun the heirs of Nash Buckingham, or the heirs of the individual who found the gun, or for that matter is the rightful owner those who purchased it at the Julia's auction. I may be wrong, but, I believe if Nash Buckingham had the gun insured and his insurance company paid out on the loss of the gun, than Nash Buckingham no longer owned the right to the gun if found. His insurance company would then be the rightful owner. Any thoughts on this?

Yes, Nash collected the insurance on it. If anything, some insurance company could have had a claim on it. Statute of limitations had probably run out on all of this. It was hashed over endlessly on this site at the time of the auction. At the time of the auction, Jim Julia addressed the insurance company issue.

On the other hand Jim Kelly could have kept quiet when Bo Whoop was brought into his shop for a new stock and could have, probably, bought the gun for a song. Jim, being straightforward and honest as I know him to be, did not do what many would have but instead told the owner what he had.

I am generally trusting of everyone until proven wrongly.

However, in this case I have to believe that in the age of the internet having a gun with someone's name on it and not Googling that name would have odd's of somewhere near winning the Powerball and the Mega Millions in the same week. Lol

But again, the family stands by their story and you must respect it.
