Rebates

Please assist on helping me understand the anatomy of a shotgun.
What are the "rebates".

I got MM's Fox book this morning as a Christmas present, first edition.
On page 159 it says, "XE frames were filed with rebates at the top and bottom tangs".

Great Christmas present! If you have an interest in Fox guns, you'll burn thru that before New Years eve.

the semi circular notches in the x frame on both sides of the trigger guard are the rebates. Its also on the top of the frame but more noticeable on the bottom. It serves to interlock the stock with the frame and looks nice too.

The rebates began appearing on the higher grade guns, XE-grade and above, about the time of the Panama-Pacific Exposition. "Normally" the rebates, profiling the breechballs to the contour of the barrels and rib, and a lock screw on the top-tang screw were features of the higher grade guns, but this certainly wasn't universal. The rebates of the frame were little indentations at the front of the top- and lower tang where a little tenon from the head of the stock protrudes into the frame. Gun with the rebates --

Also, over time the junction of the top-tang with the frame changed from a wide radius to a very nearly square corner. A gun from 1910 --
