Post by SPE33 »

Wondering if anyone has seen or heard of one like this before-Mylandco.website has listed a Sterlingworth cape gun.12ga.by 45-70-500. serial#70345 .I have seen pictures of a L.C.Smith with a 45-70 insert that projected out past the end of one barrel. No pictures of this gun tho.Several other Foxes here as well.

Seems as if I heard George mention several years ago that he had that gun, but I cannot remember any details about it and I have never seen it. George (Lander), who owns the company you mentioned, is a member here, or was. I see he hasn't posted since August of last year. Maybe he will pop in and answer your questions about it.

Try typing cape gun in the search function in the upper right hand corner of the screen, and see what comes up.

Yes Stan: I do own a Fox Sterlingworth 12 gauge x 45-70 Cape Gun. The SN is 70345. It has 30" barrels. It is an extractor gun with sling swivels & rifle sights (added on). It appears to be a very professional if not a factory job.It has the Philadelphia address. At one time I owned another Sterlingworth with both barrels chambered for 45-70. I haven't been posting much since I lost my wife this past December. I would like to order a factory letter on this gun & another Sterlingworth that I just acquired SN 115054 which is a 12 gauge two barrel set w/ matching numbers. I am not able to pull up the ordering info for a letter. Could someone please help.
Best Regards, George

George,

The AHFCA Board offers our sincere condolences on the loss of your wife. I copied this from the drop-down on our site. Hope it helps. -----SC

Write to John T Callahan--- John T. Callahan, Arms Historian, P.O. Box 82 Southampton, MA 01073. Provide the serial number, gauge, and grade and enclose a check for $30 for Sterlingworths and $40 for graded guns. You will receive a letter in 4-8 weeks.
On the whole....I'd rather be in Philadelphia....

Thank You Donnie (Waterman) & Toolman. It has been a tough nine months. We were married for 52 years and they went by like a flash. I will send off for factory letters tomorrow.

Best Regards, George

George,

I am saddened to hear of your loss. You have my sympathy and my prayers. Last we talked in person was at the Fall Classic in 2012, as I recall. My best wishes to you.

Stan: With regards to SN 70345 my February 2, 2010 Callahan letter states: "that is is a Sterlingworth Fiels, 12 Gauge, 28 barrels Choked Mod (R) & Full (L) it has a walnut stock measuringing 114 inches LOP & 3 drop at heel. It's weight is 6 3/4 to 7 pounds. It was shipped from Fox's plant in Philadelphia, PA on December 1, 1913 to the original consignee entered as T.B. Davis Arms Co. of Portland, Maine". Mr. Callahan.s note states that "I never heard of any that were furnished commercially with only one barrel rifled. He further state that he knows of one that has both barrels rifled that was an R&D gun. He also states that he has it"

If I am not mistaken Michel McIntosh states in his Fox book that Ansley's son had some double rifles made up at the plant for some friends that were going to hunt in Africa.

Best Regards, George
