Dogholes, apples and a Fox, paper shells added

When I was shooting NSSA skeet against Eightbore in the latter half of the 1970s, as a member of the U.S. Navy and shooting in class A or AA I could take my receipts for 500 targets, any gauge, out to the armory at Annapolis and be reimbursed a case of 12-gauge Winchester/Western AAs. In the early 1970s when I was officer-in-charge of the ComNavAirPac Skeet & Trap Team all the ammo we got from the Navy was Remington All Americans.

I revised my post to clarify to my friend Researcher that I shot International Skeet "with" the Army and Marine teams, not "on" either of those teams. The members of both teams were way above my pay grade in International Skeet skills. I have shot some American skeet with "Researcher" and I can testify that he is quite adept at shooting any gun, not just his dedicated skeet guns. I find it quite boring, as he does, to leave the fun guns at home and shoot dedicated clay target guns full time. By the way, commissioned officers are permitted to shoot on the military American Skeet Teams, just not on the International Teams. Sorry to have hijacked Silvers' thread, but I thought I would mention that he is another one of those guys who shoots the fun guns as well or better than the dedicated clay target guns.

That's Dave. I don't own a Fox Toy Gun. By the way, Mike Campbell is another one of those guys who shoots with the big boys with fun guns. I don't even know whether he owns a serious dedicated clay gun that does not have its barrels mounted side by side.

I still use a 32" 682 on those rare occasions when the outcome is more important than the journey....like shooting trrap for score. For everything else it's a Fox. All I'm lacking is a Fox SBT.


While we're on the subject of paper shells, I think these lacquered ones from the 30's are the prettiest shotshells ever made.

Not a two piper gun like the one being held by the uniformed lad in the picture above contributed by Mike Campbell but a gun just the same.

It happens to be a .22 rifle held by me at a shooting gallery in Coney Island in May of 1956. If you hit the bullseye, it took your picture. The photo is reversed (I do not shoot left handed). I suspect the picture is taken via a mirror so that no one shoots the camera. I still have the picture.

Our home port was the Brooklyn Army Base, just a short hop on the subway to Coney Island. Our ship transported GI's to and from Europe back then.

My buddy Mike Pore looks bored. Wonder where he is today???

The Darby was one of our sister ships. I was on the USS Butner TAP-113

Did you delight in the Darby's trans-ocean services back then?

I made 17 round trips to Europe, the Med, etc.

I took the last ride on the Darby in '66. I think they had just re floated her. It seems like the trip taking the 2nd Armored Cav to Nam was more than she could handle or so the story went at the time.

That is one great picture. By the way, Mike, my "not so much fun" gun is also a 32" 682 that I have shot since about 1986. It now wears a Wenig crossover stock, a gift from a Florida shooter whom I have never met. He just heard through the grapevine that I shoot crossovers and he sent it to me.

Marshfellow, can't remember for sure what that .22 was 54 years ago. In my mind, I'm hoping it was a Winchester model 62 Gallery gun. I enlarged the picture but still couldn't make a reasonable guess.

I was at Coney Island around 1956 also. I remember the Steeplechase and the wind grates. The wind grates were very interesting for a preteen boy. I wonder if they're still there?
