To my knowledge there is no schematic drawing available. Maybe I’m wrong about that. The rod you are referring to sounds like the automatic safety push rod. You can remove it and it will simply convert the gun to a manual safety which is preferred by some.

Sterlingworth 20ga I bought had a broken right guide pin with the remaining broken piece stuck in the hole. Finally got around to messing with it this week. Jeff, yes that is exactly what has happened. Someone along the way has removed the pistol grip and it is evident in the checkering which they sanded away and never recut. They did a reasonably good job though the angle to the toe line isn't quite kept. Also, it has a Hawkins pad that has been added....
