Foxes at Rock Island

Anyone else following the Rock Island auction?

I was surprised at how low some of the doubles have sold for, especially the H that sold yesterday. I looked it over in person, obviously without the benefit of knowing the state of the chambers, chokes etc., but it sure looked like a nice example to go for the price it did. I had my eye on some other guns to come up later in the sale or would have bid higher on it. Many of the doubles that I looked at had some flaws of one sort or another, and I'm sure that depressed bids, but there were some real deals on English guns during the first day of the auction, not to mention the few Foxes they had.

The Wildfowl was a steal in my opinion. But I've always had trouble pulling the trigger at RIA based on the limited photos they provide.

We live within about 3.5 hours from Rock Island and so usually drive up for the viewing day. Although I have had good luck buying from the old Julia's auction service, I knew some of the folks there and could call and review a gun with them. I'm not sure I'd buy a gun at auction without either seeing the gun myself or having someone look it over for me.

I did not look at the Wildfowl gun, but it did seem to go for a rather low price. The couple of A grades they had were very nice, one in especially good, and apparently original, shape. There were some pretty good deals from the auction yesterday.

If I remember correctly the Wildfowler had replacement wood so I think it hammered in the appropriate realm, not to mention the PB. One note of interest is the letter that was provided. Some good info on late era Wildfowlers. I’m w/Jason, the limited pics are a detraction for me. Don’t even show a single pic of the floor plate/bottom on most guns. Hard to tell what you are getting.
