Fox Collectors

I bought a Savage fox B seller it is from late 60 to early 70 with American Walnut stock. Did they come from factory with a type or varnish finish. Do i need to strip off varnish or just sand. Stock has a few scratches. Thinking about Boiled Linseed Oil. Has anyone tried Boiled Linseed Oil or maybe other finishes Thanks

Do not mess around with Boiled Linseed oil.

I cannot say for sure what Savage used on the Fox Bs. But Tru-Oil will give you good results that are close to what was on the guns originally. And it is easy to work with.

I found a good deal of helpful info on stock refinishing in the "technicana and restoration forum" a few years ago when I refinished the stock of a cheap sterly 12 picked up at auction. Lots of things people have tried, some more helpful than others, posted throughout the forums. I ended up soaking the stock in acetone, to remove original finish, had to soak in something else after, can't recall what, then was able to keep the sanding to a minimum. I had never done one before and was very concerned about sanding to much and ending up with a receiver that was"proud" of the stock wrist. All in all a fun project made possible by all the info found on these forums. Thanks to all who share their knowledge and experiences.
