Fox Collectors

My name is Roger I'm 67 and live in South Prairie WA, have always wanted a sxs, just recently decided I have to get one. After lot of research I think the A. H. Fox will be the one. Really like this forum. Looking for a 12 or 16 Ga pheasant gun in the thousand dollar range, any help as what to look for or stay away from would be greatly appreciated. I have been watching the videos with Jack Rowe which are wonderfull, such a nice man and wealth of knowledge.

in that price range you should be able to find a nice Sterlingworth 12 or with luck a serviceable 16

if you are a full member - watch the for sale forum- or post details on what you would like as far as barrel length in the wanted to buy section

Yep, welcome indeed. Agree that you can buy a really nice 12 gauge Sterly for that. 16 gauge dooable for sure, but it won't be a closet queen for sure. For pheasants I'd be looking for a 28" barrel gun. If you get a later Savage made gun, it will have a much better chance of being factory chambered for 2 3/4" shells as well.

For a couple hundred more bucks, you might want to consider an early A grade 12. Way under valued, in my opinion, and has the best in fit, finish and workmanship. Ask the man who owns one!

One of the founders of this fine group, the AHFCA, is from northeast Washington State (Spokane). Researcher/Dave Noreen is a wealth of knowledge all things relating to just about everything I guess but especially side by side shotguns and ammo. He might chime in here and offer some suggestions.

Glad to have you with us Roger,Welcome.From the information available on this site,I think most members would agree the early guns would be the graded guns before the engraving style changed around 1913 or so.If you could find an early Sterlingworth such as one of the 'Pin guns' their quality is comparable to the graded guns in my opinion.They just won't have as much engraving.You would probably have to be happy with a 12 gauge tho,early small bores are not that common and that drives up the price.I do not know of any small bore 'Pin gun' style Sterlingworths ever turning up.That said,I found my 'Pin gun' at a gun show for $600.00 dollars. I also have a very nice early BE grade I found online on an auction site for $1000.00 dollars. They are out there,you just have to have some patience and keep looking. Good luck,go to as many gun shows as you can.

It was said earlier by Rick, but bears repeating. The membership dues for full membership here will entitle you to access to the other forums, one of which is the place for the buying and selling of Fox guns. This alone is worth the dues each year, IMO. There are some good, clean guns that change hands here.

Yes, by all means, go to some gun shows and check out all the Fox's you can handle just to get a feel of what they are.
The early guns probably up to around 1911, 1912 or about what SPE33 says.

You've probably already checked out the pictures on our home page to see what what the various grades look like but pictures below are a couple examples of an early A, late stlye A and a 1911 Pin Gun. All 12 gauge. And by the way, that early A pictured is a gun I've had more than 49 years and have put about 7000 rounds of light hand loads thru it in the past 6 or 7 years. And the old girl still closes like a bank vault. Serial number 7983, probably about a 1907 gun, +/-.

If you're not doing anything the weekend of January 19, 20 and 21 and you want to go for a ride, take in the Las Vegas gun show. There will be many Fox's there to look over.
