Wish I could say she handled running pheasants well, but she sure didn't. We hit a local SGL that must have been stocked yesterday. Little Sophie went into bird scent overload and went absolutely nuts. Put up 14 Roosters and 4 Hen's in 90 minutes which would have been great for a flusher. For a pointing pup not so much. She did point 2 of the 14 Roosters and one of the four hens and that was enough to take my two for the day. Little girl had a nice battle with a broken wing rooster. This is my little 20 gauge Sterly ejector that has been upgraded to a second generation A grade. PS. I like Woodcock and Grouse much better for training a young setter for sure.

Nothing like a "target-rich environment" to put the sap on a young pointing dog's head !

She was back to herself today. Hit a SGL in Pa that didn't have pheasants and she pointed 4 Woodcock and 3 Grouse. Had an absolutely perfect poke at a Grouse at 10 yards and missed clean. Probably lucky for the grouse that I missed it at that range. We will try pheasants again down the road and I'll reel her in a bit tighter and see if I can keep her from going nutso.

Setters/Pointers have a hard time with pheasants especially wild birds. Wild birds run like hell and the best way to get them air-bound is with a flusher, labs are the best in my opinion. Setters are the way to go for grouse/woodcock hunters and pointers are the best choice for quail. Tom your dog is one of the prettiest I have seen, great colors---beautiful.

Thanks for the king words on my little Sophie. She's 2.5 years old and is rather amazing when she is not hunting pheasants. Nice looking as well.
