I was rereading Craig Larter's great DGJ article about the C grade Fox and thought I would post some photos of a recent acquisition of mine. This early CE has the banner and scroll engraving and a woodcock and quail on either breech ball. The barrels, 30 inches, have no weight markings on them and are choked .009/.040. The gun weighs 7 lbs 11 oz. and has the early style ejectors. It came to me with the black pad pictured here, but I plan to replace that one with another more appropriate. This is a well balanced gun, and it will see use in the dove and quail fields of Missouri this coming season.

There was one on Gunbroker for a few years, but it got away before I had the money to get it. I like those early C's

On those early Wayne & Bristol Street guns they just had the Krupp markings on the bottom side of the tubes and some had the extra line that either said "HEAVY WEIGHT BARRELS" or "LIGHTWEIGHT BARRELS."

The Krupp markings are there. I don't recall anything else. I'll have to pull it out of the safe today after I get my chores done.

Curious what serial number range your gun is in? Don't need the last digit displayed if you prefer, as in 123X, where "X" is the last digit.

Jolly, I am away from home at present, so I can't get the entire serial number, but I know it is in the 22XX range. I can post the entire number later when I am home if you would like.

We don't get to see many of those real early guns, especially the C's. Slick looking gun, a real dandy.

According to McIntosh, the earliest smallbores had the old style engraving, and there is record of C grades having been made toward the beginning of small bore production in the latter months of 1912. I have no doubt that one of our more knowledgeable members with some history with the AHFCA has some direct account of the early style engraved smallbores.

Oh, for a 16 or 20 bore C grade and the early style engraving...with long barrels and a straight/splinter stock! For me the Holy Grail.

The A.H. Fox Gun Co. was six years past the "banner" style C-/CE-Grade engraving when the regular smallbores were introduced in 1911/12. We know of a couple of Wayne & Bristol Street guns made in 16-gauge, but neither in C-Grade.
