Fox Collectors

I was considering this gun at the Southern because it has a straight stock. Still interested, but before I decide, I wanted to ask about the "R ___ L" present in the picture above the red box. I would assume the gun used to have a single trigger. I've never seen one before, and the gun has double triggers now. Can a single be put back in? Were Fox SST's problematic?

The gun had been fitted with an Infallible selective single trigger, not a Fox-Kautzky.

Thank you. What amount of difficulty would I expect finding the parts and restoring that functionality?

Obsolete design. You might try posting a WTB for parts but personally I'd get that slot filled and R - L stampings laser welded and finished off. Sorry I don't have a recommendation for a gunsmith.

Thanks. I'd prefer to put it back the way it originally was, at least what I could. Having taken a look at the Hunter One Trigger with Smith's recently, it would be interesting to look at the Fox (Lancaster) version.

See Tom Kidd's article An Expatriate Returns in Volume 6, Issue 4, of the DGJ. It includes several pics of an Infallible and its innards on an early CE/20 bore Fox. Sorry I don't know the status of the copyrights/renewal and thus I don't want to scan or copy the pics. These older issues are available from the DGJ or sometimes on E Bay etc.

If its an AE then the stock panels shouldn't be checkered, (unless so marked on factory letter) so if you are wanting to "put it back" to original consider that and make sure it was a straight grip from the factory. Good luck!!

Thanks. I likely will pass on it. I don't mind too much the cut barrel for, but the checkered panels didn't look right somehow. The main allure is the straight stock. They've consistently felt best to me, yet I've never owned one, and wish to. I would swap my shooter 1909 A 12ga 30" Krupp (half-pistol) for a similar shooter that had a straight stock.

Your gun was not fitted with a "Fox Lancaster" trigger. There is no such trigger. The Infallible trigger, made in Lancaster, PA, is a retrofit. You can, maybe, find out the original configuration of your gun from the order card or a Savage letter. It was likely originally a double trigger gun. I find it rather strange that the Infallible was replaced, because I have had and still have several guns with Infallible triggers, and they all work just fine. I would not give up on this gun if you like it, just don't pay too much for a non original gun.

They're asking $1500. I described it to a fellow in the Fox booth at the Southern, who said pay no more than $900. I did bring the gun over for a visual assessment as well, but folks were too busy in other conversations. Didn't want to interrupt, and the owner didn't want me gone too long with their gun.

Yup, you got good advice. It's not a $1500 gun.
