Fox Collectors

Hi folks,

I have an acquaintance who has offered me what he tells me is a very special B grade Ansley Fox. It is a very early B grade with serial #58. The barrels are 30 in., the barrel bluing is at least 80-85%, no colors left but nice patina. The wood is really nice with no major dents or scratches and is a round knob pistol grip. The checkering is still in very good condition. The action is a little loose. With the forend on the barrels have a bit of play side to side. All parts share the matching serial #58. He places an awful lot of historic importance in this low serial #. He is asking $9800 for the gun which seems awfully high to me. Am I off base or is this a reasonable figure? Is there any real significance to the low serial # that I am unaware of? What do all of you think?

I think that if he put it on Gunroker with no reserve he'd find out what the most someone would pay and I do not think he'd be even close to what you quoted unless there is something "else" that makes it really special.

Way off base in my opinion. Low serial number is not worth 3X-4X value in my opinion. Tell him good luck and keep searching. Craig Larter

He's being greedy so far as I can tell. Condition sounds so-so and barrels/chokes--who knows? Number 18A was offered with cut-barrels and loose as can be action for $1500 and didn't sell, that I remember.

A C-grade, serial number 29, in better shape, is currently for sale for less.

Is this gun an A.H. Fox gun or a Philadelphia Arms gun? A Philadelphia Arms gun would be so marked on the rib.

It is definitely an A.H. Fox gun.
