Fox Collectors

I am new to posting anything but have recently discovered that I may have a very rare gun that i know nothing about. I have a Double barrel shotgun that is stamped Fox gun Company of Baltimore MA and has the serial number 901 and an A marked on the base and on the barrel. I was wandering who I could contact about more info. I would show pictures but am having trouble figuring out how to. Thanks

Welcome aboard. While the Fox Gun Co., Balto., Md., U.S.A. guns are somewhat scarce, most of them are in pretty rough shape and don't draw much collector interest (read dollars) beyond yeah it would be nice to have one as an example in the collection. If your gun is in fact 901, and not 106, it would be the highest serial number recorded so far. The two next lower numbers I've recorded 866 and 875 are just receivers.

1. Create an account at photobucket.com
2. Upload the pictures from your computer to photobucket.com
3. Open up the picture file that you uploaded to photobucket you want to display in your Fox forum post.
4. In the "Links to share this photo" dialog box on photobucket.com click on and copy the "IMG" code
5. Come back to the Fox collectors forum, create a New Topic, then paste the IMG code in your post.
6. Click on preview and if you have done the copy and paste correctly you will see the picture.
Very simple, but sounds more complicated than it is.

Most of the guns recorded are A-Grades with twist barrels, but two B-Grades with Damascus barrels have been recorded in the 3xx serial number range, one of those a straight grip. To date no one I know of has found a magazine ad or a catalogue from this company.

Have 15 vintage double gun receivers in excess to my needs. One is Fox Gun Co. Balto MD with serial number 195. It was stamped twice. It looks like first stamping was light so it was stamped again. Any others have doubled serial number?

It's been a while since the original post, but I recently acquired a Fox Gun Co and was searching the forum for more info about them.

My gun also has the serial number double stamped on the watertable. A pretty light stamping near the standing breach and then again heavier out towards the hinge pin.
I wonder if the light stamping could have been struck before the barrels were fit and material was filed off the watertable during fitting that partially removing the original stamping.
Then after all was fit up, they re-stamped?

What I found interesting was that looking down through the barrel lump cut you can see the top of the floorplate and the serial number on the floorplate.
There is a machined slot in the floorplate for the barrel lump. On one side of the cut is the first digit of the serial number and on the other side is the last digit.
Both of these are made with the same large stamps as the SN on the watertable. In the bottom of the cut, in a much smaller stamp, is the middle digit of the serial number.

It looks like the floorplate was stamped with the serial number before the slot was machined and the middle digit was machined off during the cut. So they used a smaller stamp that could fit into the cut to add the number back.
