Fox Collectors

I own an A.H. Fox 20 gauge SP grade, serial number 203974, purchased by my grandfather and which I've subsequently been given by my father.

From basic research this seems to be the last one sold to the general public in 1946. I was wondering if anyone had a rough idea of the value of the gun ? It's in good shape, and I use it a couple weekends a year for quail hunting quail and the occasional shoot or sporting clays.

Welcome Cody. I also own an SP 20. Use it for ducks, doves, squirrels, clays. Very versatile gun and one of my favorites. Mine has 28" barrels, pistol grip, butt plate. 1936 gun.

Without good photos and more info on your gun all I can offer is anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand as to a value.

Cody, I would like to see pictures of your gun if you get a chance....I've been didling around with SP(E) grades for quite awhile now and I'd like to see the current configuration of your gun. It's only been the past few years that many many Fox collectors/ gun aficianados even knew what the SP(E) guns were. Alot of eyes were opened after the McIntosh book came out and Headrick did his article in the Double Gun Journal. Try to get us a few pics.

Thanks for the feedback. The gun is being cleaned (misfiring or firing both barrels at once during last weekends quail hunt) and as soon as I get it back I'll snap some pics and post them. The gun has the Ivory beaded sites at the end and mid point on the barrel, and the Fox-Kautzky Single Trigger, and the Savage Arms safety, as well as the auto-ejectors. Nice SPE...with special order features...beavertail, single trigger, ivory sights t'boot. Definately a very late gun for sure. Get a letter from John Callahan,the Savage/Fox historian, and he can verify features as well as when it was actually sent out of the factory. Thanks for sharing the pics, I will add it to my log of "discovered/surviving" SP(E) grades.

I don't have the book with me now, but I am pretty sure that your gun is listed in McIntosh's book by serial number as the very last Fox ever shipped. I am sure that someone will check on this to verify and give the date it was shipped as listed in the book before I have a chance to on Monday when I have the book in front of me again. If not, I will do so.

I just noticed that you mentioned it being the last one sold to the public, so I am guessing that you have already verified this with the book. Interestingly, I posted a link to photos of another SPE on the members forum that has a higher serial number than yours (#203980) that sold last year. Of course, just because it had a higher serial number in no way refutes the claim that yours was the last one sold.

It might be the last graded 20-gauge in the records, but guns with higher serial numbers have been found for which there are no surviving records. As I recall the last gun shipped was supposedly a 12-gauge Fox-Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game Gun, serial number 161127, page 374.

The book lists this SP #203974 as the last gun shipped out to the sporting goods trade on December 12th, 1946. The gun that Researcher mentioned was taken from the factory as the last new in the box gun sold from the warehouse to Roe Clark in 1956. Very interesting that you can say the gun is listed by serial number in the book, though.
