Very interesting gun. It sure has all the characteristics of a Sterlingworth stock except the round grip.
It has me stumped but it sure looks like the original stock. Why is the owner going for a new stock it sure looks like that crack could be repaired easily??
To bad the owner doesn't get a letter to see if the round grip is mentioned. Thanks for posting pictures, very cool. Craig

Good question. He's going to restock the entire gun, but also retain the old wood as well. The owner's last name is Byrd and is related by some shape or form to the late Senator Byrd of WV. I'm sure there is some sort of history to this gun that goes way back. It is was mine I'd certainly order a letter.

Great pictures.I had a sterlingworth wildfowl that had the recoil lug inletted into forend wood.Lot better system than that darn wood screw setup!

Thanks Tom for posting. Wrist checkering looks to be original and factory, but the fourth pic from the top shows the frame is way proud of the stock head on both sides. Also the cheek profiling isn't all that distinct. With the three taken together, it suggest to me that a factory stock may have been retrofitted. Perhaps that's why the stock is cracked though the head. Silvers

Hello,
would it be too much trouble to take the wood off the forend and photograph how the recoil lug is fit to the forend iron? I had always thought it was welded in place, but your photo is the first I have seen that is clear enough to show that at least from the top it is not.
I am making a beaver tail for a set of 32 inch 16 ga barrels and would like the extra strength that the lug offers.
Thank you,
Fritz

Fritz,i have fitted several and it is a horseshoe looking piece that is tapped and threaded at an angle for the screw to pull wood back securely against forend iron. Bobby

Sent you a PM Bill. BTW, both you and I are always vertically challenged, but I'm guessing you weren't referring to height.
