Fox Collectors

So it rained overnight and today was a nice quiet day for hunting. I had some things to do this morning but managed to get out in the afternoon. Saw three other hunters out for birds, and one doing archery deer.

What a difference a week makes. Compare this pic with the ones I posted last week. Colors and leaves are mostly gone.



I decided to hunt the valley, and walked the old S&NY railroad bed that runs for miles except where it's been washed away by the creek that's parallel here and there. Nice easy hunting with good cover on both sides. Here's an old bridge that carried untold virgin pine and hemlock logs at about the same time Ansley was making guns. Yep, imagine a Shay lokey huffing and puffing along here.....



Broke up a flock of turkeys and called these back in just for drill. Turkey season doesn't open in this Unit until early November.



I flushed one grouse but didn't shoot, too thick and too far. Also raised two woodcock and managed to bag one. The old Fox is a 16 gauge Philly A grade, full capped pg, 28 incher with factory cylinder and mod chokes. Nice combo. Someone knew what he wanted when she was ordered.



Now that the hunting seasons are coming on strong, maybe we all can get more Fox pics posted here..... Silvers

Looks like fun Frank. Up in Coastal Maine now. Had two good days in a row up here when it comes to Woodcock. Lots of birds indeed. Monday the three of us collectively flushed 10 Grouse and 39 Woodcock. Two Grouse came home as well as three limits of Woodcock. Couldn't hit a bull in the ass with a base fiddle on Woodcock although I did eventually get my three with my 16 Gauge A grade Fox. Switched to my Fox SW 20 gauge with a beavertail yesterday and shooting rapidly improved. Gun weighs a bit more then the 16 with the beavertail, but I seem to shoot it better. Made more shots then I missed yesterday with in and I was trying out Spreader Loads from RST and also RST's size 10 shot shells. Those who say those 10's don't work on Woodcock are wrong. Stoned one bird at 35 yards and it was anchored when the dog got there. Don't have the means to post pictures now, but I'll try to get a few up later. PS. Grouse numbers appear to be down up here, but loads of Woodcock.

Frank is definitely "da man". Very nice Frank. Our woodcock season here in Dixie does not open until December 18th but goes thru January 31st. This is during the heart of deer season so lots of orange is really needed.

To me nothing beats a 16 ga with 28" tubes for all around hunting.
