A quick woodie hunt

I went squirrel hunting yesterday morning and heard a few wood ducks in a slough on our property. I decided to go try them this morning, even though the weather is horrible. It was 63 degrees at daylight and very foggy. I brought my 6 year old son, Fox, along to watch the action. The action was fast and furious right at daylight and I was able to get my limit of drakes with my Super. We had a blast. Now time to cook some duck and wild rice!

Very nice, thanks for posting, the great pictures. Woodies, a Super Fox and your son it doesn't get any better.

Nice pics and narrative, Caleb. Good job on picking out the drakes.
Last year's season and so far into this one, I've taken 14 woodies and 13 of them have been drakes. As you know, they fly so early that the light is often insufficient to readily determine a drake from a hen. You're usually shooting at a black silhouette. How I have managed to be at 93% drakes is puzzling, but I think I must subconsciously pick out the bigger ducks to shoot at, and they are often the drakes. That's my best guess, anyway.

That is a great percentage. These were flying low enough that I could see the white on the drake's heads on two of them. The third I shot flaring above me and I think I did the same thing, picked out the biggest of the two.

Fantastic. My favorite duck to eat among quite a few ducks. I think male Woodcocks are the Cock Pheasant of the waterfowl world as far as looks go. Love to see them in the wild and they always bring a smile to my face.

Went back this morning to a different spot. Fired one shot and killed one duck, but boy was it worth it! May have to mount this one.

He was banded in 2022 in Kentucky. Pretty cool!

I'd love to shoot a few more with my HE, with lead 6s. They were awesome woodie killers back before "non-tox" was mandated.
