My First Fox

Just picked up my first Fox. A 1923 H Super Fox, 3" chambers with 28" barrels(shortened by a previous owner from the 30" it was ordered with). I realize the collector value isn't there with the barrels being shortened but I am a shooter not a collector and this gun will serve my purpose well for waterfowling over decoys. Plus at 1/4 the price of a collector gun and in Canadian $ no less it makes me very happy to find this to hunt with. Lying next to my NID4E this thing is a beast! It makes my NID look like a 20ga!

Congrats on your Super. Many of the members who make time to reply here have already done that to your similar post on the Parker site. As a long time student of Supers I ask about your 3 inch chambers. Are the barrel flats stamped exactly 3 IN. which is the righteous Fox stamp? If not it was probably rechambered post factory. A good close up pic of the barrel flat stamping would be helpful if you will post one. Thank you.
Also it looks like the top rib (second pic) has two plugged screw holes where a sighting gizmo was once attached. Not that common but I’ve seen a few Supers with similar mounting holes. frank

Congratulations Canuck. You’ll have fun duck hunting with that Super. Please post some hunting pictures once you get out in the marsh.

I don’t know what you’ll be using, but I really like the Kent “waterfowl” bismuth, 2 3/4” #4’s for ducks.

Congrats on your new Super! Looks like it will be a fun gun that will get used which is great! Good luck Thursday and let us know how she performs. Have you measured the chokes/constriction? Even w/2” cut I’m assuming you’ve got some decent choke left. Post pics of Thursday’s shoot

Canuck, the barrel flat pic isn't the best and even though I expanded it I don't see the 3 IN. stamp. Your Super is so early that progressive 3-inch shells/chambers hadn't been perfected and it was most likely made with tight chambers for 2-3/4" progressive shells like Super-X's. That can be problematic insofar as ejection if not properly rechambered for 3-inch shells especially when using modern plastics.
On the Parker site you wrote that the ejector rods were removed. I answered your first post there while assuming it was the ejector stems you were referring to. However on these new pics I see the ejector stems and ejector mechanism are intact and what I call the ejector guide pins are missing. Both of them. If this were my Super I would not be shooting it for fear of breaking a stem due to lack of outboard support of its ejector face. It's a simple fix to replace the guide pins as long as the pins are not broken off and lodged in their matching blind holes in the barrel. frank

Ok thanks for that info. I pulled the barrels off to have a look at what you are referring to. Both guide pins are broken off inside the barrels. I'll get it sent off to Chris Dawe to see if he can repair it.

I have a case of that Kent bismuth but was worried it may be a little too high pressure for the old guns. I was given 51-10rd boxes of the green box Bismuth No-Tox ammo by Eley from when Bismuth was first introduced. I have both 2.5" and 2 3/4" in 1oz to 1 1/4oz that my old guns really seem to shoot well with.

My plan is to send the gun to Chris Dawe once waterfowl season is over. The gun wears a very hard from age black Hawkins recoil pad. What would be the period correct pad for it? Did they come with a black Hawkins pad back then or would this have been a replacement by a previous owner?

The primary pad in use at the time your gun was made was the Jostam Anti-Flinch, a vintage pad that hasn't been reproduced.
Other pads available at that time were the Jostam Air Cushion --
and the Jostam Sponge Rubber --
The No-Shoc was patented the year before your gun was made but I don't know when they hit the market.
The various Hawkins pads didn't come out until a while after your gun was made.
Of course, the Silvers was the "standard" the A.H. Fox Gun Co. installed on the XE-Grades and higher, but they don't absorb much recoil!!

Just some thoughts here: Burt Becker of Fox Company fame and one of the geniuses regarding the original boring of Super-Fox guns was reported to favor the Jostam "Hy Gun" pad (not shown in Dave's excellent collage). Same pad as furnished by the factory on Nash Buckingham's X/HE "Bo-Whoop" s/n 31088 except that its Record Card shows Hy Gain (sic).
NOS Hy Gun pads often seen FS on E-Bay and the rubber compound is usually quite flexible as compared with other vintage pads. That's the one I would retrofit on a Super-Fox to replace a bad pad. Personally I don't like the SW Silver & Co pads because of their giganto screw hole plugs. Just sayin'. frank

The patent application for the Hy Gun pad was filed May 21, 1926, and Patent No. 1,642,835 was granted Sept. 20, 1927. So I didn't mention it for a 1923 gun.
