Is this a Super Fox?

Hello everyone. My dream gun has always been a Super Fox. I came across one recently, but I am curious because it doesn't have the "H" stamp on the barrel flats. Instead it has an "I" stamp. Everything else looks good. 32" O weight barrels, all matching serial numbers, the right engraving. They also have the stamp on the flats that says the barrels aren't guaranteed. I even measured the receiver at the breech balls and it is considerably larger than a normal 12 frame. Or larger than my A grade anyway. It is also a philly gun. Has anyone ever seen anything like this? I need to get a letter on it for sure. I'll attach some pics. Thanks!

Looks like a Super-Fox to me. Why it doesn't have an H stamp is anyone's guess. They were made by human beings. Order the card from the AHFCA and/or get a letter on it from Cody --

Thanks Researcher. I just joined the AHFCA so hopefully I can get the card.

Checking my files I see 27837 has the H to the left of the dog-bone symbol --

as does my 3 IN. Super-Fox --

Very interesting. 27837 is only 5 away from my serial number, pretty cool!

Now that you are a member request the card. It sure looks and sounds like a Super based upon your description and pics.

Definitely a Super. Like others I suggest you order a Record Card copy and see if it matches up insofar as stocking. And since it's not stamped 3 IN. I also suggest you measure the chambers to verify if original 2-3/4" or properly lengthened.

FYI, it looks like the right barrel ejector guide pin is broken off. Hopefully the broken pin isn't stuck in the barrel breech which greatly complicates its replacement.

Also if you get a chance can you post some pics of the long tang trigger guard? Straight grip Supers are relatively rare. frank

Thanks for the additional pic. That long strap trigger guard looks proper to me. frank

Well I got the card back and thankfully it is a Super. From Sep of '23 looks like. And it is a 3". The card does say half pistol grip though which is surprising to me because I would have swore this was the original stock. The long strap trigger guard and the amount of wear on the stock is the same as the forearm. Even the checkering is the same and equally smooth. O well, I'm tickled pink with it either way.

Congratulations!

Supers are just super! I'd hate to think what it would take at this point to buy mine from me.

Caleb, I’m a former Fox BOD member and have access to the Record Card copies. I’ve also been a student of Supers for many years. I looked at the Card for 27832 when you first posted and saw the gun was made with a Half Pistol grip stock, and that resulted in my reply to look at the shape and length of its trigger guard.

Then I read your newest reply and didn’t remember any 3-inch notation, and just now revisited the Card copy. The “3” you see in the upper right corner of the Card copy refers to 3” drop at heel, not the chamber length. And in the absence of a 3-inch shell notation it can be assumed that your Super was made with regular tight 2-3/4” chambers intended for 2-3/4”/1-1/4 ounce period progressive shells. frank

And it is a 3".
How do you possibly deduce that from the card?

Western introduced the 2 3/4-inch 12- & 20-gauge Super-X load put up in their FIELD shell for the 1922 season --

By their October 1922 magazine ads they added the 16-gauge Super-X load put up in the 2 9/16-inch FIELD shell --

Western didn't introduce the 12-gauge 3-inch Super-X to the market until late 1923/early 1924.

Yes after I posted that, I realized that it was the drop at heel and not the chamber length. Thank you for the reply and for you and researcher's insight.

Caleb, you’ve got yourself a real nice gun. My Super has 32” barrels, and while it is chambered for 3” shells, I have only used 2 3/4” shells in it. As a fellow duck hunter, I would encourage you to purchase Kent Bismuth “Waterfowl” ammo. Number 4 shot works. In my gun, my tests have proven that the pellets will pass completely through a 1/4” thick piece of pine at 60 yards. If you can hit a flying duck beyond 60 yards, you’re a better shot than I am. I sincerely hope that you will post pictures of your gun with some dead ducks next Fall. Keep me posted. Jeff
