The following picture is of a 16 ga. Sterlingworth's barrel flat. It is a Philly gun from 1914. Does this look like stamping performed later by Savage - perhaps the gun was returned for repair and Savage extended the chambers?

No, it does not look like a Savage mark to me. Savage usually added 2 3/4" marking on the exterior of the barrel of early guns sent for repair, etc. Dave Noreen would know best.

Thanks very much, Mr. Kaas. Yes, I have seen the exterior stamping. Was hopeful that this was an early Savage stamp or that current owner resisted the exterior stamping. If it is simply an after market stamp - then it was just done as a reminder to the user? Thanks,

Interestingly enough it was also a 16 gauge SW and on the water table. Looked the same as this one.

I'm sorry, I don't understand. Are you saying you've seen the same stamping on the watertable of a 16 ga? Is that just the "16 ga" stamp?

I have an early Utica gun that is stamped 16ga on the watertable (a bit neater than yours ), but nothing about the chambers or gauge on the barrel flats.

My Philly 20ga's are not stamped with the gauge.

Thanks, Mike. Well, I had hoped it might be Savage, but I guess I have my answer. I can't imagine why anyone would go to the trouble to stamp the barrel flats? Neater? Yes, well, I guess it must have been past quitting time and the rush was on.

My 16 ga A philly gun also has no gauge marking on the watertable.

I've seen the 2 3/4 stamped on the water table and I've seen the 16 Ga stamped on the watertable. Those were two different guns. The 16 gauge with the 2 3/4" on the watertable was a Philly SW 16 and had 30 inch barrels. It also had a replacement but original buttstock (the Uttica late ugly kind). My guess was the gun was sent back for restocking to Uttica and at the same time had the chambers lengthened. Maybe the owner didn't want 2 3/4 stamped on the barrel.

That was what I was hoping and makes more sense to stamp the flats than the water table. I certainly would prefer the barrel flats to the barrel exterior myself. I guess there is no concrete answer, but I appreciate all the responses very much.

He probably had a 6 stamp, but it was upside down and he thought it was a 9.
