cut shells

Post by 44whiskey »

when i was about 12, me and a friend who was abou10 headed from his house to the woods at the end of his road. he rode his bike and i walked.we got to the woods and a ferral billy goat attacked .the damn goat stood on his back legs and and repeatedly head butted my friend into the ground. abandoning the bike we finally out distanced the goat.his father returned from work and was told of the event. the goat had attacked my friend in the past.his father said get in the truck and we jumped in the back, off to retrieve the bike.when we reached the end of the road his father reached behind the seat and removed pump shotgun.while we were loading the bike his father was fiddling with his pocket knife and a shotgun shell. after a short hunt and not finding the goat friend asked his father what he was doing to the shotgun shell with his pocket knife, thus we were introduced to the improvised slug made from a dove load. he also demonstrated its effectiveness by firing it into a nearby pine tree where it buried a little below flush. no warnings of caution followed the demonstration and we showed anyone who would listen this bit of woods wisdom and im sure they did the same.when discussion of chamber length and shell pressures are approached with caution i wonder if any consequences were suffered by anyone due to us sharing our newfound magic bullet.this was brought to mind by stumbling across a current youtube video spreading the technique . ps not long after this the friend demonstrated to me the effect of a claw hammer striking a primer placed on concrete. regards fred

When we were kids my dad told us that when he was a teenager he shot a lot of ducks in Maine. This was at a time during WW ll when food and other things were rationed and meat was not easily had. He said that he would cut a shell to load in one barrel in case a deer was jumped.
Of course my brother and I had to try this and we did. We tried to shoot a few jackrabbits with my single barrel Stevens 16 gauge but never did hit one. We settled on an old abandoned car. It made an impressive hole. I’m not sure I would try this again.
