point system
cleaning out dresser drawer i ran across several old wallets that i will never reuse. before throwing them in goodwill box i checked for stashed cash but found none. what i did find was a photo stuck to a lone star beer pocket reference of duck point values. i had forgotten about the old point system used back in the 70s.was this used in other states and is it still used anywhere.all the best, fred

Re: point system
Oh boy! I sure remember those days (Michigan). That was tricky, and we couldn’t shoot as many ducks.
Shoot vintage firearms, relax, and have fun.

Re: point system
I hunted during the point system, it only lasted a couple of years in NY. 10 point ducks were teal and widgeon as I remember, we had great flights of both during the point system years. Rumor is the eastern flyway is going to 1 mallard per day, that would hurt!

Re: point system
In the late sixties the limit was seven. A friend and I shot fourteen green heads one day. We were hunting with my golden retriever pup.
I took a few pictures of the pup and the ducks. The photo processor lost the film so I lost the pictures. The dog later died in an accident. It was my last hunt with the pup. Thankfully I still have the memories. John

Re: point system
MD had it up into the early 1980s. After a real bummer morning hunt on Pocahantas WMA in Back Bay VA, my gunning partner Charlie and I drove up the Eastern Shore of VA and crossed over into MD and headed for Deal Island WMA just south of Dames Quarter and due east of Wenona. We rigged out in the high marsh in the impoundment and hunted for a couple of hours but took no shots; only trash ducks flew in the tepid, still weather. We were about to pull out when around 11:30 AM the wind shifted suddenly to the northwest, the temperature plummeted, and it began to blow in earnest. Ten minutes later, everything flew. In those days, Deal Island was a Widgeon stronghold and they were a 10-point duck. We had my usual LARGE decoy spread out (105 duck decoys and 3 Whistler swan homemades I had rigged up). When they came on, they came in a rush in groups of 5 to 10 birds, hell bent to get out of the wind and into the rig. These were before the days I became interested in SxSs; we were both shooting Remington 870 pump 12 gauges. Charlie's was bored modified and mine was bored IC. Between the two of us we killed the limit (20) of Widgeons in just under a half an hour. The point system was just fine with us! Kevin

Re: point system
Ohio also used the point system for a few years
I really liked it as it required us to id ducks, hopefully before pulling the triggers
Remember one special day harvested 8 blue wing teal then a hen mallard. the teal were each 10 points and the hen mallard was 35 points which ended the legal bag for that day
up to 100 points but last duck could take just over 100 as long as you were below 100 before harvesting the last duck

Re: point system
This thread is bringing back memories. As a kid, my friends and I all studied the pamphlet by the Department of the Interior and LeMaster guide to ID our ducks! We all walked to the swamps after school and on more than one occasion the local warden was waiting for us when we walked out of the phragmites after dark to count em up if he heard a lot of shooting and we were lucky.

Re: point system
I have that same book somewhere. Not because of the point system as I hunted after that, but we had a local lake that had all kinds of weird (to us) ducks show up late in the season and we were trying ID them. Diving ducks were not the best eating so we were hoping to figure out if they were puddle ducks. PS. If you have ever attempted to eat a Merganser you know what I mean.
