I am far from being a wood expert. Can anyone identify the specific walnut? frank

It looks to be older growth Circassian to me with wonderful mineral streaking and a bit of marble cake. Probably from Turkey, but France and California also produce some nice Circassian. I don’t claim to be an expert either though. Beautiful lumber regardless!

Looks a lot like the wood on my Parker Repo, which I was told was California Claro. Whatever the case, that is a sharp looking piece of wood. I love the honey & smoke type stocks.

"Thin shell" often "European thin shell" is a generic term for Juglans regia (aka English Walnut, French Walnut, Turkish Walnut, Circassian Walnut, etc. all depending on where it is grown).

Thanks everone, a long time stocker on another forum says its California English. Kind of fits since the gun is alleged to have been re-stocked in So Cal. Daryl, the gun will appear in an upcoming Journal article and I want to keep details under wraps for now. I'll send you a personal text with info. frank

My old college Textbook of Dendrology, Harlow and Harrar, states there are six species of Juglans native to the U.S. but only American Black Walnut, Juglans nigra and Butternut, Juglans Cinerea are significant lumber species. They state that a California species, Juglans Hindsii, is used for the rootstock for English Walnut cultivation along the Pacific slope. Am I correct in assuming that is the source of "California Claro"?

IMO California English. Lighter background is typical of that type of Wood. Some of the Parker Reproductions were stocked with Califoria English and others with Claro Walnut also from California. Calico Hardwoods was the supplier back then. Turkish background wood is darker and more of a muddy brown based on what I have seen.

Yes, my meat gun was stocked in California English. Here is an early pic before I had it engraved as an second generation A grade. Also, the other photo is the Abby Gun, which was also stocked in California English. My other restocked guns are either Circassian or Turkish. PS. I attached a photo of a great piece of Turkish that is in the vice. This feathercrotch Turkish. You can see the difference.
