I just added a 20 Ga Sterlingworth and it is raising more questions than answers for me. The serial numbers and barrel markings indicate the gun was made in Philadelphia in 1929 just before Savage took over. It has a beaver tail fore end and straight stock which I don't think are available in the Sterlingworth for another few years. The fore end is beautiful figured wood with very fine checkering and it's serial number matches. The butt stock is not of the same quality and is poorly fitted to the gun with some filler. I'll add some pictures as soon as my internet stops acting up. Thought maybe someone just threw some parts together to make up a gun but the matching numbers are confusing me. {Not sure if the Butt stock number matches yet.}

The answer is quite straight forward. The wood is not original. It was restocked at a time after manufacture, and rather poorly.
