Anyone seen anything like this?
One pic shows the #4 sideways and another shows it struck twice one atop the other.

AHah,

If you could please, see if you can get some better pictures. Kinda hard to see what you have.

Thanks in advance.

My guess is the worker applying the serial number got the "4" stamp 90 degrees out of sync.

I've never seen it before but really not too surprised that it might happen occasionally.

And thanks for the better pix.

My guess: An early Monday morning job for a N. 18th St. apprentice after a
"lost weekend" filled with one too many of these.......

They must have had some sort of guide to get the row of stamps as even as they did. For years I had to stamp some military equipment after modification and would go out of my way to get someone else to do it because of the bad job I did at it.

i used many die stamps thru my millwright years. they had a grind mark to designate bottom.i recall one being ground 90 degrees off. this was very rare. way more common operator error.all the best 44whiskey

To Tool Man’s point could have been Monday morning or Friday after lunch! Living in the land of US auto manufacturing there was a joke about not buying cars built of Friday afternoon!!! Across the street from the old big plant in Flint is the remnants of the old bars one right after the other!!
