Thanks for posting the picture. My computer skills seem to reflect my age. This picture was posted a coulple of years after the gun was lost but thought it could have been taken earlier of the first Bo whoop. The gun looks to be a Becker but you can't see much detail. In the photo with Old Dan, that gun looks to have shorter barrels than 32" ?

I guess that depends on the angle of the gun away from the photographer, ie., a steep angle would make the barrel look shorter than it is . . .

But would he have been bird hunting with a 32" F&F gun, assuming the photo was taken during such a hunt?

I think they look pretty long. Much longer then the Burt Becker "Quail Gun" would look in such a pose. Nash shot Skeet with BoWhoop at the Campfire Club range. Elmer Keith believed his Magnum-Ten Ithaca was good for far rising Sage Grouse!

Given the pose and the angle of the gun, I guess it does look about as long as the gun in the photo of Nash standing. I was thinking most bird hunters prefer the 26" and 28" guns.

I don't understand I may be missing a post here. Why is the but stock checkered when Bo Whoop had a kick pad and where are the screw holes? I'm just asking a question I'm sure Stan or Dave can help. Donnie

The broken stock that was on 31088 when it surfaced is not the original stock with XE-Grade checkering that was on BoWhoop when the picture was taken for the Derrydale edition of Ole Miss. If you note 33050 below BoWhoop in that picture has different pitch then BoWhoop. Maybe Nash decided he liked that better and had BoWhoop restocked?!? All pure speculation and things we will probably never know the answers to.

This picture of Nash that I used in the Newsletter, was the frontispiece in the Putnum edition of Blood Lines. In The Best of Nash Buckingham, George Bird Evans annotated this picture -- "Nash in 1934 with his favorite gun, the first Burt Becker magnum "Bo Whoop," and the Springer Spaniel Chubby, probably the favorite of all his dogs."



If that is a Springer Spaniel, I'll eat it!!!!! Another of many mistakes in Evan's book.

You ask a good question. Wouldn't it be nice if the broken stock matched the stock in the excepted pictures of Bo-whoop. We would have very few questions as to it's authenticity. It's never that easy is it. So how does this stock, which is not Bo-whoops, end up with the gun? Anyone ever heard mention of Bo-whoop being restocked during Mr. Buckinghams time with the gun. Are the existing photo's believed to be of Bo-whoop really Bo-whoop? There are still plenty of questions for the experts to answer, and I for one can't wait. The legend of Bo-whoop lives on.................

I don't believe the broken stock is from any Becker gun or Fox factory gun. It would be interesting to see if it even fits on Bo Whoop. The guns from the Bartholomew collection, including the Beckers, were in terrible condition, but that probably has nothing to do with the stock in question.

Question for all.

Does anyone on this site believe that the new "Owner" should have the right to profit from this sale given the documentation of the circumstances involved with this gun?

Just for info - pic of the cheek checkering on an HE ordered with XE grade wood, serial number of this Super is in the same 310xx bracket as Bo-Whoop 1. Shipped Dec 10, 1925 per John Callahan letter. Silvers

Although admittedly much nicer than that on the broken stock I photographed, that still is not exactly first class checkering is it? Pretty bad border on the bottom of the panel.

eightbore, I did not remove the replacement buttstock from BW to see if this broken one would fit, but was told by the man who carried it to and from the restocking gunsmith that it was on the gun until restocked.
