Rested our lab one afternoon last weekend to hunt with a friend and his champion lab.

On this hunt he pointed about half of the birds we encountered. Owned by a professional trainer, this lab is already in the HRC HOF.

Having a really good bird dog can get you a Lotta invites to hunt. That's nothing knew. Folks love good honest bird dogs.

. I went down to Maine early enough to catch the end trout season and the opening of Patridge season. Dog was transfixed by the pond she just sat still watching While I threw flys off this dock.

. while hunting came across a tiny mountain stream loaded with beautiful brookies swimming up to spawn. what a site.

I grew up catching native brook trout and eating same. Many don't realize their flesh is orange like a Salmon. Quite tasty. I ate a pile of them. Big one was 12 inches.

the thing about brook trout is it takes more calories to eat them than you get from the fish. theoretically if roasted brookie is your only food you would eventually starve. the ones in the pond this stream fed are the only fish in it and some are larger than normally seen.

Interesting, I read up on them a bit more. According to the USDA a 3 oz. portion of brookie has 94 calories, compared to 121 in the same size portion of wild caught salmon.
