Ty Cobb's Fox

Post by Drew Hause »

Everyone has seen this image of Cobb receiving his Fox; this was in Baseball Magazine

Image

This was in the August 1915 DuPont Magazine and explained that the gun was awarded by Philadelphia Shriners

Image

The September DuPont Magazine states that the gun dimensions were established using a DuPont try gun

Did DuPont have a Fox double try gun?

The gun Ty actually picked out at the A.H. Fox Gun Co. factory was a straight grip 26-inch DE-Grade. See the May 2018 Card of the Month.

Drew, can you send a picture of the DuPont try gun in the Ty Cobb article. I haven't seen that article and don't know whether the try gun is my Dupont gun. Thanks. Bill Murphy

For the life of me I can't understand what's the big deal on Cobb's Fox? Must be the infatuation with baseball and somehow that rubs off on his gun? Yes it sounds like a neat Fox but do we have any references telling how and where Cobb used it? A 26" "trapshooting Fox"? Yeah right.

Personally I think Grandpa Zeke's or Uncle Rafe's Sterly bought with cookie jar savings and that helped feed a family during the Great Depression (and shows it) has a better story, and I for one like to read about those Foxes then and now. frank

You could replace Cobb with any other celebrity owned gun and ask the same question. Personally I would never pay any kind of premium for anything owned by anyone who has celebrity status. But I guess to each his own.

I'd suspect "The Georgia Peach" would have used a 26-inch, 16-gauge, bored Imp. Cyl. & Imp. Mod. to shoot Georgia quail.

It’s all a matter of what you or I or anyone for that matter holds in high regard . Just because this person thinks some gun has an astronomical value and you or I don’t agree that’s their and our prerogative . Personally I’d hold Archibald Rutledges Parker in high regard or maybe the Evans/Norris Purdey . But that’s me !
Parker’s , Mannlicher Schoenauer’s , 6.5mm’s and my family in the Philippines :!:
