Loose forend

Post by Perdix »

All, towards the end of the season, I noticed the front of my splinter forend had a very small amount of side to side play when mated to the receiver/barrels. A small piece of tape on the barrels in that region removed the play but the latch does not close with a sharp snap when mating it to the barrels. Any guesses for a cause based on that limited info? Is it wear between the barrel hook and forearm latch? Any smiths you’d recommend for a fix? The gun is a 20ga CSMC Fox. Thanks!

Thanks Bobby. I was hoping that might be true although I am not the original owner. Any thoughts around why the forearm might be loose?

You have the luxury of the company that built the gun is still in business to do the repair. Take advantage of that.

I hope everyone’s season is off to a great start. It’s been warm in Idaho and I prefer to wait and run the dog after a frost or two.

Is there any reason a forend shouldn’t snap on? I have never owned a SxS where it didn’t. I shipped my XE to CSMC and heard from them this week. They said they couldn’t find anything wrong with the forend. They said they could make it so the forend snaps on but I didn’t take it as a recommendation. What would you do in this situation? Thanks.

Matt, often with a new, or lightly used, gun the forend won't actually "snap" the latch into place when you press in on the wood, and will need a slight push with the thumb on the latch itself to finish seating it. I like them like that.

Thanks Stan. I believe I’ll leave it alone and trust their smiths.
