Scout - French Brittany Spaniel Pointer

Post by Uplandguy »

Pics of my 5 1/2 month old French Brittany Spaniel puppy, “Scout” pointing while on a trip to visit our daughter and her family in Utah last month. My first bird dog and he has been so much fun!

Thanks for asking. He has a lot of power for his size and more than I expected. French Brittany Spaniels (Epagneul Breton) are the smallest pointing breed and the only Spaniel that points. Male standard height is 19-20 inches and weight 30-40 lbs. He is now 35 lbs and 19 inches at the withers. I expect his chest/front torso to expand/fill out more with time. His social ness with other dogs and humans is almost Lab like. A few weeks ago at our weekly Saturday morning “pointer school class” he did a beautiful point on a live bird at 20 feet, which seemed pretty good for a puppy.

Very nice looking dog. I am confused, what's the relationship between your dog and a regular French Brittany?

A French Brittany and a French Brittany ‘Spaniel’ are the same dog. As I understand it, French Brittany Spaniels were originally imported from France in the 1930’s to the US. Importation stopped due to WWII and didn’t really start up again until 30 or so years ago. In the mean time, the Brittanys that were here were cross bred with pointers and setters to make them larger and farther ranging dogs to better accommodate our larger properties and ranches in the western US. Similarly, there was a concerted effort to breed out the Black fur color making our “American” Brittanys primarily orange&white or liver&white with occasionally tri-color of orange/liver/white dogs. There are some who feel these American Brittany’s lost some of their lab-like family dog charm. In the last decade or so, the UKC established two separate Brittany breeds, namely the American Brittany and the Epagneul Breton (French for Brittany Spaniel). These recently introduced Brittanys have a broader color palate with the addition of black as well as a lot more ‘roan’ effect with each of the colors of orange, liver, black and tri-color. They also tend to be smaller dogs.

What is the allergy situation with this breed. I am looking for a non allergenic pointing breed.

I wasn’t sure. I did a google search on hypoallergenic hunting dog breeds. It would appear that poodle pointers, wire haired pointing griffons and German long haired points let most every article. Too bad Brittanys didn’t make the list. :-)
