YEHAA new member of the XE club(pics added)

Post by James Wark »

Well this is something I never thought I would say but just picked up a XE grade utica fox 12 ga. I was wondering if anyone has the breakdown on how many XE where made in the 12 gauge and numbers of phila guns to utica guns. Plan on posting some pictures when I can.

Thank you for the breakdown chart. This is a 26 inch half pistol grip, so 1 of 20, pretty neat. Found out there is a records hit at griffin and howell but the historian has retired and no information can be had.

Congrats Jim. Well, we talked a dozen or so times while at the Rock shoot last weekend and within a few days you come up with this fine XE. Either it came out of nowhere over just the past few days, or you're really good at not spilling the beans. Either way, way cool!

Researcher or Craig, does such a chart exist for 16 gauge XE's?

Would love to see it if possible.

Roger I never did a tally of the 16ga XE's. I have completed a study of the so called "head down Fox" 22xxx serial number 12ga XE's. there were 121 made out of 473. I have only recorded as observed 11 of the 121, so plenty more to discover. It is a basis for a NL article. Craig

Thanks for the information update Craig.

If I ever fall into a nose down Fox, I'll be sure to send you my notes!

The information, once cataloged, is like gold nuggets of data that can keep getting mined up again and again.

Roger, you probably know the smallbore chart on page 145 of MM’s Fox book shows 79 XE/16’s made in Phila and 11 in Utica but it doesn’t have a breakdown listing bbl lengths nor stock styles.

For those interested in other grades in 16 - 20 you’ll have to refer to the book as I’m sensitive to copyright ownership in copying charts published elsewhere.

Frank,

Yes, I was hoping/looking for more detail regarding barrel length and stock type.

One thing I didn't mention in my earlier post, 57 of the 121 head down 12ga XE's were made as straight grip!!! Talk about a treasure trove of guns yet to be discovered!!
