Not a Fox to be seen .....

Post by Silvers »

So, in spite of the CV19, politics and now the riots that are tearing our nation apart, the Handicap Subgauge shoot went off really well yesterday at Rock Mountain with 46 registered shooters and many more who were just casual shooting. Mountain Mike's concept is that smaller gauges get increasingly greater handicaps, and pump guns/double guns also get +5 X's as compared with over/unders and semis. Example, a 16 bore SxS gets +8 birds. Mad Mike set his targets on the stiff side and with 6 simo pairs, and the gusty wind didn't help. It was good to see so many on the course including familiar NSCA tournament shooters. There were quite a few Parkers fielded including Chuck Bishop with his really nice GH 28 bore, but I didn't see a single Fox of any gauge and that includes me shooting a Winchester Model 12/20 gauge. Ya gotta know limitations ….. as much as I like Fox smallbores for hunting, most IME are too whippy for serious clays shooting and besides who wants to get pounded with 100 shots on a sporting course except perhaps with ultralite ammo? Yeah I've heard that ultralite stuff "crushes" any and all targets and even from guns of those that rarely shoot except at cupcake courses.

All told, casual competition shooting is starting up and it's good to see many regular folks taking a break and coming out to shoot. It's too bad the PA county restrictions are being cut back too late for Ernie Hausmann to prep for his Northeast expo/shoot that had long been anticipated for this coming weekend. :(

Sounds like a fun event! Thanks for the report, and kudos to Mike for hosting the event. Right now I'll have to live vicariously through you. I'm not allowed to go shooting until the patio at our cottage is done. I compacted the sand yesterday, and the bricks were delivered today. They end is in sight. I'll be shooting soon. Jeff

I was fortunate enough to squad with Chuck on Weds. shooting a course that was'nt tough but the target setter knew how to use speed and angles to through you off.

I shot, which is unusual for me, a Parker 28", 20ga. skeet gun. It just needed some exercise. .005 and .007 breaks targets OK but not as hard as I like.

Chucks 28ga GH is a 28", M/F, on an O frame. Nice condition, PG, DHBP w/spur, DT and very shootable dimensions. I believe he discussed this on the PGCA forum.

Chuck shot it well. I shot it on one station and did'nt tarnish the guns legacy.
Owning a Fox is not a spectator sport.
