Savage Fox B-SE Series H Parts

Post by enchood »

I recently inherited a Savage Fox BSE Series H 410 Shotgun (single trigger, side by side)

I am a mounted shooter and would like to shorten the barrel to use for competition - do manufactures exist who make a shorter barrel (20" or less) that would fit on this model shotgun? If not, would it be terrible to have the original barrel shortened by a gunsmith? I have no idea the worth of the gun - it had been sitting in my grandfathers gun cabinet for years. Any help is greatly appreciated!

My view, your gun is approaching 100 years old. I wouldnt shorten it. It will still be around when we are not. No one cares now or in the future about the way YOU would like it to be. Dont ruin a fine piece of art for selfish reasons. Not to be harsh but how i look at it. Of course any man can do as they please, and if it makes you happy than thats what matters i guess.

You are mixing the early Fox era B's with a post fox era Savage B-SE which is not really a Fox at all. The big tip off is that Fox never made a 410.

I see both your post counts are low so you may not have the depth of knowledge a lot of folks on this forum have.

Stick around, it will grow on you. In few years you will be answering other new poster's questions.

To answer the original question, you might find a surplus set of barrels online or from one of the parts houses if you really have to have short barrels. If you cut the ones you have you will turn a $800 gun into a $250 gun IMO, assuming it is in good shape.

Thanks Romac. After i posted started thinking Fox never made one but thought Savage did and knew CSMC does. Started to confuse myself. Was just looking it up. So thanks for correcting me. But you are correct in i do have no knowledge. Learning all the time, cant stop reading about them.

I am very new to this style shotgun, and shotguns in general, but I appreciate any clarity on the topic.

Printed on the gun says "FOX Savage Arms" "Model BSE Series H"

The gun has been sitting around unused, and I thought it was been fun to give it another life in Mounted Shooting. This requires me to pull the shotgun from a scabbard on my saddle while running a pattern on my horse - as you can image this is not especially easy to do, and shorter length barrels are preferred. I was hoping to either purchase a smaller barrel OR have a gunsmith shorten the current one. I was unsure where the start the process either way.

I do not mean to be a wiseguy at all but the best way to think about it is that a BSE is Fox like a Mustang II was a Mustang.

After your more in depth explanation, I'd probably just cut the barrrels. Any competent gunsmith should be able to do a professional job.

Don't cut it down, there are many of us looking for a 410 Fox that you could pass it along to then get a true mounted shotgun.

Just saying

Check some of the for sale boards and see what those Model B .410's are bringing. You might be wise to sell it, buy something else to cut down, and put the extra money in your pocket.

I would give it some thought before I would cut the barrels. Last year I sold a Fox Model B 410 double trigger, 26" barrel, extractor gun in excellent condition for $1200.00. Single trigger, ejector models bring even more money in excellent condition.
